Weather in Hrvatska!

The climate varies from Mediterranean along the Adriatic coast to continental inland. The sunny coastal areas have hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The high coastal mountains help to shield the coast from cold northerly winds, making for an early spring and a late autumn. In Zagreb, average daily high temperatures peak at 27°C (80°F) in July and drop to 2°C (35°F) in January.

The warmest months are July and August when the air temperature is between 25° C and 35° C(77° F - 95° F) and the sea temperature reaches up to 28° C (83° F). The rain is very rare. This is the time when most of the tourists come. Read more when to organize your trip to Hrvatska >>>>>>

The most complete account of Hrvatska history is Marcus Tanner's A Nation Forged in Warwhich covers it all, from the Slavic migration into the region until the 1990's war.

Journalist Mishy Glenny has written extensively about the passions that tore apart the Balkans. Try Balkans Nationalism Great Powersto understand Hrvatska recent history.

Country environments

The water on Croatian coast is clean, even the cleanest in Europe?! German ADAC (car owners union) tested some Mediterranean and Adrian water areas on the coast and all swimming waters in Hrvatska were "very suitable for swimming"! There was no beach of bad quality water in Hrvatska.

The water in Croatian side is clean. One skipper from Zadar was joking (or was it true?):"If you flush the toilet in Zadar, in four minutes everything will be in Venice." The streams in the sea bring the dirt to Italy; the only bad thing is that they take also fine sand to Italy. Maybe that is the reason why most of the beaches in Hrvatska are stony. The official bathing beaches are easy to walk but please be careful and don’t step on a sea hedgehog. It is better to wear swimming shoes. Normally the beaches are shallow and become deeper conveniently. On rocky beaches it is deeper and it is possible to jump in to the sea. Remember to check what is under the water before jumping!

Travelogues

The mother of all regional travelogues is Rebecca West's marvellous Black Lamb and Grey Falcon , an account of the great lady's journey through the countries of former Yugoslavia before it was Yugoslavia (1936). It's a travel classic, filled with wit, insight and the literate West's elegant, rolling sentences.

In a completely different style, the inimitable Paul Theroux recounts his journey through the Mediterranean (including Hrvatska) in Pillars of Hercules.

Robert Kaplan's Balkan Ghosts is a travelogue with a decidedly different flavour, written just before the war in former Yugoslavia exploded.

Novelist Josip Novakovich explores his family's Croatian background in Plum Brandy: Croatian JourneysBeautifully written and insightful, this Croatian-American writer deserves to be read more widely.

Hrvatska unique rural culture is fast disappearing. Fortunately Tony Fabijancic has given voice to Croatia's rural folk who recount their lives and struggles in Hrvatska: Travels in Undiscovered Country.

Life in Hrvatska

Croatian journalist Slavenka Drakulic writes frequently (in English) about living in Hrvatska . Read Cafe Europa: Life after Communismto find out what it's really like living in Hrvatska.

Language

Croatian is a Slavic language that arrived in the Balkans region with the migration of the Slavs in the 6th or 7th century. The language eventually evolved into two branches: East South Slavic and West South Slavic. Bulgarian and Macedonian derive from the East South Slavic group and Slovene, Serbian and Croatian are derived from the West South Slavic group. Later in Hrvatska eventful history a series of occupying powers - Ottoman, Venetian, Hapsburg, Italian - enriched the language with new German, Turkish and Italian words. Croatian dictionaries with advanced linguistic capabilities contain all you need to feel comfortable and assured abroad or when communicating with your overseas business partners. Over 1,200 commonly used and emergency phrases on 12 topics and with over 500,000 words makes these dictioraries a must have travel compagnion. Read more >>>>>>
