Sibenik Croatia Cathedral!

Sibenik Croatia, the oldest Croatian town on the Adriatic which is unique because of its extraordinary location in a picturesque and wide bay at the mouth of the River Krka. It lies on the slopes of the hills in the northern part of the bay, surrounded by three fortresses: St.Nicholas, St.John's and Subicevac.

 

It was first mentioned in 1066 in a document issued by the Croatian king Petar Kresimir IV that's why it is sometimes mentioned as Kresimir's town

In the old part of the town the houses are made of stone and closely built and the streets are narrow and winding with lots of steps and vaults. Little squares and numerous cultural and historical monuments testify the rich history of the town.

Sibenik has remained the same as it was. This is a town of inestimable historical values. The gorgeous river Krka with plenty of waterfalls in the National Park which is only 10 km far from the town, a hidden port toward the open sea with ecologically preserved group of more than a hundred of islands - Kornati - another National Park , and a historical source and inspiration to the most prominent Croatian writers, sculptors, architects and musicians.

The Cathedral of St James (1431-1535), on the Dalmatian coast, bears witness to the considerable exchanges in the field of monumental arts between Northern Italy, Dalmatia and Tuscany in the 15th and 16th centuries. The three architects who succeeded one another in the construction of the Cathedral - Francesco di Giacomo, Georgius Mathei Dalmaticus and Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino - developed a structure built entirely from stone and using unique construction techniques for the vaulting and the dome of the Cathedral.

The form and the decorative elements of the Cathedral, such as a remarkable frieze decorated with 71 sculptured faces of men, women, and children, also illustrate the successful fusion of Gothic and Renaissance art.
