Split Croatia - the town of Roman Emperor!

Find your Split Croatia hotel and read what others has to say about Split!

About Split Croatia, there is a song saying “There is no city like Split” and it’s a truth. This city is my home town and without hiding their pride, the people will tell you that their city is "the most beautiful one in the world and beyond".

Split, the second largest city in Croatia, is the capital of Dalmatia. Split achieved fame when the Roman emperor Diocletian (AD 245-313) built his retirement palace from 295 to 305. After his death the inhabitants of nearby colony of Salona fled to Split where they found the shelter behind the high palace walls, where their descendants live to this day.

The old town is built around the harbor. Ferries to nearby islands Solta, Brac, Hvar and Vis, are continuously coming and going. The western end of the peninsula is a vast wooded mountain park with its famous Marjan hill. The ugly commercial and military port is fortunately quite far enough on the northern side of the peninsula.

Diocletian’s palace is one of the most impressive Roman ruins in existence. The palace was built from white stone of the island Brac (the same one, used in construction of the White House) and construction lasted 10 years. A military fortress, imperial residence and fortified town measures 215 m from the east to west and 181 m wide. The entire structure covers 31.000 sq.m. The palace has four gates named after metals. The northern gate is the Golden Gate, the southern gate is the Bronze Gate and the eastern gate is the Silver Gate while the western gate is the Iron Gate.

Diocletian’s Palace is protected by the UNESCO and entered into the register of the World Cultural Heritage. Split Croatia things to see!
