About Croatia - When I first laid eyes on Dubrovnik's main road I had an overwhelming desire to rip off my shoes and slip down it in my socks or, even better, dive belly first and see how far I could slide. The road, known as the Stradun, was so shiny I could almost see my face in it. 'It's made out of pure marble,' a companion told me and I spluttered in disbelief. Isn't marble reserved for the lobbies of five-star hotels or the bathrooms of the super-rich? Apparently not.

It’s said of Istria, the peninsula that hangs from Croatia’s northernmost tip, that in every home there is a drawer containing seven flags.

Picture this: you’re sipping a cappuccino on the sunbaked wooden deck of a ferry steaming between idyllic islands. A pair of dolphins chase at the stern, and two yachts — their blue and white sails puffed out pompously — race towards your wash. Otherwise, the water is as smooth as a satin sheet. The Seychelles? Southeast Asia? Absolutely not. The ship is called Dubrovnik, and this is island- hopping Croatian-style.

There's a bubbling just below the surface in Zagreb, the Croatian capital of one million people, and most visitors sense it instantly. It's a well-worn, East-meets-West passion called Balkan culture that equally embraces a consumer's desire to visit a newly opened fragrance shop and the cafe next door where an entire goat turns slowly on a spit.

Croatian islands are small parallel worlds; each island has a life of its own.

And yet here I am spending more ink on the place, drawing more attention to it. Obviously, this no longer can be considered one of Europe's delicious secrets. But it should be on everyone's must-see list, throngs or no throngs. Ideally, Dubrovnik is absorbed, savored over many days. Still, even a glimpse is better than nothing. No other city on the Continent quite compares.

Whether or not you believe any of the hype about the "new Riviera", Croatia has certainly been attracting plenty of big names to cruise around its crystalline waters and 1,000-plus islands - from Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg to John Malkovich and José Carreras.

If thoughts of a holiday are tickling your fancy during the dreary winter months, Croatia should be first on your list.

A flight to England or Europe, followed by a short flight or a drive from Italy or Austria, and you are in Croatia-a country that combines beauty with a palette of activities.

In the 1980s, Croatia - then part of Yugoslavia - built up a sizeable yacht charter industry. Tourist resorts appeal to the traveller who enjoys the convenience of nearby restaurants, nightclubs and bars, as well as the many on-site amenities provided. Perhaps you've just had sand kicked in your face one too many times. or you're tired of dodging Frisbees and footballs on the beach. Now it's time for some peace and quiet. Read more….
