Cave diving

Blue cave diving on the Bisevo island

Cave diving is very popular among professional and recreational divers. Here is the list of several most popular caves scattered along the Croatia coast from south of Dalmatia to Istria peninsula.

The Cavtat archipelago - The islet of Bobara

Bobara is a small islet off the Cape Sustjepan in front of Cavtat, the small town southwards of Dubrovnik. The town was built at the site of the ancient Epidaurus, the Roman town destroyed in 7th century AD by the invading tribes of Avars and Slavs. The refugees from Epidaurus founded Ragusa – the future town of Dubrovnik.

In the middle of the islet of Bobara the ground is gently sloping to an underwater cave at the depth of 12 m. The cave is 15 – 20 m long and gives a wonderful opportunity for divers to watch the rich submarine life, shoals of all kinds of fish and numerous crabs. Behind the cave, the ground abruptly falls down a steep wall to the depth of 90m. Between the islands of Mrkan and Bobara there is another steep wall falling to the depth of 80m. Along the wall there are numerous smaller caves and holes encrusted with algae and corals with shoals of fish swimming around or peeping through the holes.

The Odysseus' cave (Mljet island)

Odysseus's cave is situated under the village of Babino Polje. The large cave is used as a harbor by local fisherman but is also the center of another famous shipwreck story. According to legend, Odysseus found his shelter in the cave after surviving a shipwreck on Mljet.

According to Homer, Odysseus survived a shipwreck on his way back home from the Trojan war. He swam into the cave for shelter and there the nymph Calypso, daughter of Poseidon, waited for him. Amazed by the beauty of the nature and in love with the nymph Calypso, Odysseus stayed on the island for 7 years.

It is easy to find the entrance into the cave because there are boats anchored in front of it. A channel about 20m long and 1m high leads to the cave. The channel is 7m deep. The walls of the channel are smooth. At the end of the channel the ground falls to 15m and then gently slopes to 30m. The marine life is very rich with flora and various kinds of fish.

Diving location has to be approached by boat from the western side of Drvenik. The wall is mildly sloping down to the depth of 16m and then abruptly falling to depth of 32 meters. At the upper level there are different sorts of marine algae, sponges, shoals of fish. Mottled sea organisms grow at the lower level.

At the depth of 28m there is a round entrance to the cave, almost 2m high and 5m long. It allows entrance to a couple of divers. Orientation is simple; the entrance opening is visible from all corners of the cave. The bottom is covered by sediment silt.
