Croatia's climbing and hiking guide!

Climbing and hiking in Croatian mountains has become on of the most popular outdoor activities. The mountains of the Republic of Croatia mainly belong to the Dinaric range. Although the mountains are not very high, there is no peak above 2000 m, they are very interesting. The Dinaric range is known in the world as a classic region of deep karsts. Climbing in the karsts has a lot in common with being in the high mountains. The sharp karsts shapes, the domination of bare karsts, the lack of water, poverty of vegetation, harsh climate and sparse population require the same efforts from the climber as many much higher mountains. But there are also differences among the Dinaric mountains. Those in the north are lower and milder (in Gorski kotar, for example) and those in the south are higher and more deserted (the Dalmatian mountains). The mountains between the Sava and Drava rivers are completely different. They are made of older rock, are milder in form, fairly low, rich in water and vegetation, for which they are suitable for hill-walking and gentle hiking. On the map below we have tried to present Croatia’s most popular national parks where you can practice your passion for climbing or hiking. (Paklenica National Park)(Ucka Nature Park) (The Northern Velebit National Park) (Biokovo Nature Park) (Risnjak National Park) |

Paklenica National Park
(climbing and hiking) is the most visited Croatian climbing center, well known throughout the country as well as outside its borders, and both in terms of organization and quality, It is included among the top European climbing and tracking areas. The history of alpinism in Paklenica began long ago, in 1938 when Dragutin Brahm attempted to climb Anica kuk. Tragically, he died in the attempt. Two years later, S. Breovacki and M. Dragman completed Brahm’s mission. The second phase of alpinism began in 1955 when the most difficult slope of Anica kuk, Mosoraški, assessed as a V+ slope, was conquered. From 1960 to 1970, many faces including the Velebitaški, Klin, Funkcija, Karabora and Ljubljanski were climbed. Today, there are some 400 equipped climbing routes of varying difficulty and length, providing something to satisfy every climber. The main climbing season in Paklenica begins in spring and lasts until late autumn.
Within the National Park, there are over 150 km of hiking trails. Certainly the most frequented trail is the one leading from the reception area through the Velika Paklenica Canyon to the Paklenica Mountain Hut (about a 2 hour walk). Ucka Nature Park (climbing and
hiking) has been proclaimed in April 1999, which makes it one of the most recent Croatian parks and protected areas. In September of the same year, the Croatian Government, in accordance with the Nature Protection Law, founded the Public Institution to manage the Park, with the task of protection, conservation, promotion and use of the protected area of the Ucka Nature Park. The Public Institution started its operation in September 2001. If you are looking to experience (climbing and
hiking) one of the most beautiful panoramas in this part of Europe, then you simply must visit Učka Mountain and climb up to its highest peak, Vojak (1401 m) and its stone tower-viewing point. On a clear day, you can see Istria, Kvarner and the central Dalmatian islands, Gorski Kotar, the peaks of the Italian Alps and Venice…However, that which will most delight visitors to the park in search of an active outing in nature are the numerous possibilities for recreation, from climbing and hiking. If we add to that the many mountain biking trails and the hang gliding and parasailing sites, then the invitation to visit Učka Nature Park will be all the more enticing. What is Ucka Outdoor?

The
Northern
Velebit National Park
(climbing and hiking) was designated on 09th June 1999., while the Public Institution was founded on 16th September 2001, according to the Parliament's firman. The area was designated a national park due to its richness of carst phenomena, outstanding biodiversity and exquisitly beautiful nature on a relatively small area.
The Park is criss-crossed with numerous mountaineering trails, perfect for climbing and hiking. The most famous and widely known is the Premužic's trail, named after its constructor, the BSc forestry Ante Premužic who built it in the late 1933. The path runs through the most beautiful and the most interesting parts of the park. From the numerous peaks in the surroundings you can have a magnificent view on the Adriatic Sea and its islands Pag, Rab, Goli, Prvic i Krk, and on the continental side as well. The Park's cultural value is present in a form of numerous ruins of the so-called "summer lodges", which witness of the ages passed and long forgotten, when Velebit was inhabited by the numerous population of shepherds and cattlers. On its coastal banks you can find many ruined houses, lodges and stonewalls which once marked the specific lifestyle of the local population who scattered all around the globe in the days to come, leaving nothing but traces of their presence on this remarquably beautiful and exquisit land. |

Risnjak National Park (climbing and hiking) is located in Gorski kotar, the most wooded part of western Croatia. It lies between latitude 45°24' and 45°32' north and longitude 14°33'30" and 14°43'30" east, in the immediate vicinity of the Adriatic Sea, only 15 km north-east from Rijeka. The Park covers an area of 63,5 km2 including the central part of the Risnjak and Snježnik massif, as well as the upper flow of the river Kupa with its source area. The area of the Risnjak massif was proclaimed a national park in 1953, at the suggestion of an eminent Croatian natural scientist and researcher of Risnjak, prof. dr. Ivo Horvat. Climatic influences from the Adriatic Sea penetrating from the nearby Kvarner bay and the continental influences penetrating through the Kupa valley collide here and play a significant role in determining the specific climate of the NP "Risnjak" with pleasantly warm summers and an average temperature up to 20°C, rainy springs an autums, and long, cold snowy winters. At the Risnjak mountain lodge, snow lies for full five months. You don't need to be an alpinist to enjoy Risnjak even though the highest peak rises to a dizzying 1528metres. There are several easy walks to take through the woods and signposts in English help explain the geological, botanical and zoological curiosities. This park is the right place for your climbing and hiking activities. How to reach The Risnjak National Park
(climbing and hiking): The main entrance to the park is at Crni Lug, not far from the main motorway between Zagreb and Rijeka. Where to stay: There's no accommodation in the park although there is a small hotel, Motel Risnjak, in Crni Lug.The Motel Risnjak also contains the

Biokovo Nature Park
(climbing and hiking):
Biokovo is the largest and highest mountain in Dalmatia. It rises
vertically from the Adriatic Coast to height of 1762 m.
Biokovo
is a branch of Dinaric Alps structure, mountain chain that stretches
from Slovenia, through Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina via
Montenegro to Albania. Biokovo, as well as Velebit Mountain is the
only part of Dinaric Alps that gets so close to the sea.
Biokovo has 16 different peaks that are higher of 1400 m. Major
peaks include: Sv. Ilija - 1640 m, Sibenik - 1314 m, Stropac - 1145
m, Vrsac - 1411 m, Sinjal - 1333 m.
Because of it’s geographical position, Biokovo is a mountain that
has continental as well as Mediterranean climate, so various plant
species of both worlds meet and live next to each other. There are
lot of caves and pits around Biokovo and very often one can meet
wild muflon as well as various bird species and foxes too. The
Biokovo Botanical Garden Kotisina has been established in 1984 above
the village of Kotisina, a horticultural monument (16.5 hectares)
aimed at nature conservation and protection of the Biokovo plant
life.
The views from Biokovo are spectacular – on the clear day one can
see all Dalmatian islands as well as large part of Dalmatian coast
to the south, and to the north, towns of Vrgorac and Imotski and
their surrounding villages. Sometimes, when it’s very clear, one can
see a peak of Monte Gargano in Italy too. The coastal town of
Makarska, that lies on the very south edge of Biokovo is seen from
Biokovo as a amazing bay with tiny little houses placed in the rows
around it.
The nature park Biokovo dominating above
Makarska Riviera, is the
good destination for botanists as well as climbing and hiking,
cyclist.
