Coral Reef
Diving Locations

Coral reef and sea sponges from island of Krapanj

Coral reef round the Krapanj island is particularly interesting for diving beginners. This is a small island of famous divers that introduced diving in Croatia. They were ordinary fishermen that started diving in this area 300 years ago. According to a written document sponge diving in Croatia began in the Krapanj waters in 1522.

Since the ancient Greeks fishermen used to dive holding breath and using harpoons reaching the depth of 16 meters.

This is the smallest inhabited island close to the town of Sibenik, covering 0.36km2. You can dive all around the island. Sponges live in clear and warm waters, they are not plants, they are animals and belong to the first forms of life that was created in the sea. They feed with the plankton filtering the sea at the same time.

Grebeni islands reef

Grebeni reef in shallow water (‘plic’ in Croatian) is situated at north of the reef Greben between islands Silba and Premuda in Zadar’s archipelago. The location peak is at 2 m, and the bottom cascade descends towards the depth of 30 meters. Next to the shallow, there is Greben - a group of three large rocks: the western, northern and southern. At the depth of fifteen meters the bottom changes into stone, covered with sponges, corals and sea-moss. The current is quite strong and visibility is very good.

Paklina Islands coral reef (island Stambedar) – Hvar

This group of unique islands is located off the southern coast of the island of Hvar, in front of the town of Hvar. There are twenty-one islands, islets, rocks, bays, coves and walls belonging to this archipelago. The name of these islands derives from the Croatian word for melted pine resin that the fishermen once used for plating their boats.

The islands are a paradise for nautical tourism. There is a number of interesting dive locations in this area. Stambedar is a small island in front of the group of the Hvar archipelago.

There is a protected bay suitable for anchoring behind the cape of the island. The ground slowly descends to the depth of 20m, where a wall starts falling down to 50m.

The steep rock in its upper part is covered with various kinds of flora and animal species: red algae, moss animals, sponges and all kinds of fish. At a deeper level you will find yourself surrounded by gorgonians (animals that belong to the family of soft corals) that can grow up to 2m in height, develop a wide crown looking like a dense underwater forest. Shoals of fish are swimming around.
