Croatia climate

Croatia climate information from DHMZ

Talking about Croatia climate we have to distinguish two main types. The fist one is typical Mediterranean along the Adriatic coast characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The second one is Continental type of Croatia interior regions with rather cold winters and warm summers.

Protected by Dinaric Range from Istria all the way to Montenegro, as a shelter from cold winter weather, sea temperature never fall beneath 10°C in winter period and in August it reaches up to 26°C. Click here to see a daily sea temperature.

The best period to visit Croatia is from May to mid October. Those looking for lot of sun should visit the Dalmatia islands that get a lot of sunny hours, specially island Hvar with more than 2715 hours of sun a year followed by Split with 2697 hours, Korcula island with 2671 and Dubrovnik with 2584 hours.

As I have already mentioned that summers along the coast are rather dry, this lack of rainfall can create sometimes critical water shortages in Dalmatia and its islands. During the history there were summer periods without rain for more than 100 days, very similar situations like in Sicily or on Greek islands.
