Croatia in December

Croatia in December - last munute offers

If you travel in Croatia in December there will not be a lot "going on" and all festivals, concerts, plays performed on historical walls, beach parties are only summer memories. Even Plitvice Lakes or Krka falls these Croatia’s nature pearls are far more enjoyable during spring and summer. But there's still a lot to see and it is not too cold, especially on the coast.

Whether you will enjoy yourself at that time of year depends on what you're looking for. If you are good at entertaining yourself and enjoy just exploring, you should love it. If you want a more happening scene with lots of people, you should either stick to Dubrovnik, Split and Zagreb.

Weather in December is typical Mediterranean. The average temperature in Zagreb is 2°C (35°F) and in Dubrovnik it's 9°C (49°F). You definitely need winter clothing and a warm jacket. In the interior, around Zagreb, the snow is quite normal and boots are a handy thing to have, but on the coast, you will not find any snow at all. It could be rainy in this period.

December is a Christmas time, the most important holiday in Catholic Croatia. December 25 (Christmas) and December 26 are official holidays in Croatia. Preparations for Christmas, including decorating the Christmas tree, begin on Christmas Eve, called Badnjak.

On Christmas eve the fish dinner is served followed by a visit to the local churches for midnight mass. For Christmas dinner, the main course may be roast suckling pig, turkey or any other meat, depending on the region of Croatia. Christmas is a family feast.

If you visit Croatia in December it will also be easy to find accommodations if your destination is Dubrovnik, Split or Zagreb. Further north, in Istria for example, a lot of accommodations shut down for the winter and it is harder, though not impossible to find a place to stay.
