Dubrovnik tour to the pearl of the Adriatic sea

Dubrovnik tour in a week is for Croatia visitors planning to see this Adriatic pearl including Peljesac Peninsula and Korcula Island. Probably you will have to change plain in Zagreb and to take internal flight from Zagreb to Dubrovnik. There are also direct flights to Dubrovnik airport (Dbv) from the most European countries, especially from UK and Ireland.

If your airplane program does not include this domestic flight, you can decide to take the overnight train to Split. From Split rent a car and drive to Dubrovnik. It is about 200 km (125 miles) long. The view and feel along this Adriatic road is miraculous although the road may be tiring for those not used to drive. The trip from Split to Dubrovnik takes about 3 to 3,5 hours drive. There is another solution to reach Dubrovnik from Rijeka by Jadrolinija ferryboat but this will take you almost 24 hours.

Whichever way you choose to arrive at this spectacular city in southern Dalmatia, you will want to make the most of every moment inside and outside its walls. Download this free Dubrovnik interactive map.

Dubrovnik Tour - Days 1 and 2

Settle into your hotel or hostel ( All Dubrovnik Hotels deals) and the first thing you should do is to take a swim. If you are staying far from the Old Town, take a bus to the Pile Gate or walk if you happen to stay in Old Town hotels like 5 stars hotel Imperial or Pucic Palace (Elegant luxury inside the city walls) or in any budget hostel or private accommodation inside the city walls.

If you happen to visit Dubrovnik in July or August, the time between 11am and 17pm is too hot for walking on the walls or to promenade the Stradun. Rather explore the Old Town’s churches and museums, stop for lunch in one of many romantic restaurants, like Victoria and wait until the sun is low in the sky before you start your walk on the walls. Buy a bottle of water and return to Pile Gate entrance to the stairs leading to the top of the stone fortification. This 2 km walk on the old town walls is a must-do experience. After all, you have traveled all the way to Dubrovnik and this one-hour and a half walk on these mighty walls will be your crucial Dubrovnik experience. When you come back, take a break, a swim or a glass of white wine and you will be ready to start strolling Stradun and other parallel old street to finish this first Dubrovnik tour day with a diner in one of fish restaurants.

Day 2 in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik Green Islands on Galleon ship

This is a day to do the churches, museums, galleries and to stroll all old town streets, hiding some surprises you will find interesting including the second oldest synagogue in Europe and many hidden galleries and small museums. This day you can choose as an alternative a cruise of the Elafiti islands and green islands in front of Dubrovnik, aboard the historical Galleon ship. Come on board! This trip takes almost 10 hours and start from Gruz port at 08,50 am. If you decide to take part on this cruising, go to sleep earlier because day 3 will be tiring.

Dubrovnik Tour - Day 3 and 4

These two days are completely dedicated to Peljesac Peninsula and two small settlements on peninsula Ston and Orebic. By your rented car, take the coastal highway north in direction of Split (Route 8/E65). The map below will be very useful for your orientation.

One the way to Ston from Dubrovnik 60 km (37 miles)do not miss to visit , Trsteno an old settlement known for its sea captains and seamen, rich in history and natural heritage with famous botanical garden. Besides the parish church of St. Vid, which dates to the renaissance, there are five old chapels containing valuable paintings by famous masters.

Ston town is your next destination only 35 km (22 miles) from Trsteno and while approaching Ston you will notice the 5km (3 miles) 14th-century defensive wall that stretches above the town from both sides. This wall a mini-Great Wall of China will be your climbing challenge. It is not an easy climb (imagine climbing the stairs in a skyscraper). Next to Ston is Mali Ston (Little) both known for their oyster and mussel beds, and both have restaurants that serve fabulous versions of these shellfish. My choice will be restaurant Kod Bace.

You can tour the salt fields outside town to see how this ancient salt collection method works. Read more about Ston salt.

It will be mid-afternoon by the time you finish with Ston, and you will have time to visit some of Peljesac’s wineries, which are spotted all over the peninsula. From Ston, you will keep on to lovely Orebic toward the far end of the peninsula 60 km (36 miles), where you’ll spend the night in private accommodations or in one of Orebic hotels.
