Old City Walls

No visitor to Dubrovnik can miss to visit the old walls that surround the oldest part of the city. The entire inner city is enclosed by massive walls and fortifications, which were built , reinforced and expanded from the 12th to the middle of the 17th century. The main wall is 6.364,83 ft long. On the landward the wall is from 19,69 ft wide and on the seaward side from 9,84 ft and is in places up to 82,02 ft high.

The Dubrovnik walls are furnished with 5 bastions, 3 round and 12 rectangular towers, 2 corner towers and one large fortress. The most impressive is the huge, round tower of Minceta situated in the north-western corner of the city. Built in the second half of 15th century, it has become the symbol of Dubrovnik. The walls are considered by many to be the finest city walls anywhere in the world.

The town was also protected by two freestanding fortresses: Lovrijenac in the west, rising on the 150,92 feet high cliff, the building of which began in 1050 and on the east side by the fortress of Revelin, built from 1539 to 1551 by Italian architect Ferramolino.

The town has four city gates, two facing landward and two facing seaward. In front of each of the city gates facing landward there is a stone bridge, connected with the gate by the wooden draw-bridge.

Dubrovnik town walls are well preserved in their original state and are unique specimens of medieval fortifications.
