The Town of Artists

Groznjan art gallery - current exhibition (In Croatian language)

Groznjan with Motovun is another small hilltop village of green Istria, sitting on the top of the hill over viewing the Mirna river valley. Located in the central part of Istria, situated on a plateau south of Buje and north of Porec is often called a city of Artists. This tiny artists colony has become a must-see when you are in Istria. Where is this small town?

The Town of Artists
After the Second World War the town was completely abandoned and forgotten, unknown to the world until 1965, when Istria artists and musicians formed an artist colony there. This small town, its hard to believe, has about 30 galleries on 400 inhabitants. Many of the picturesque old stone buildings have been converted into art galleries, selling ceramics, paintings, jewelers and gifts, as well as honey and other local products. Official city gallery is Phonetics, organizing individual and collective exhibitions.

It soon became known as the "Town of Artists" and soon after 1965 the Cultural International Music centre of Jeunesses Musicales set up a summer training programme for musicians and the villages renaissance began.

Being in the heart of Istria, you should try specialty of this region in one of many taverns, like Bastia tavern, ordering a plate of pasta with the local truffles. This is a country of truffles.

The indigenous Olives that grow in this area are called "Istarska Belica" and they are grown on terraces and the hillsides that surround the ancient village. The Olives have adapted to the local climate and the olive oil that is produced offers a unique aroma and taste.

If you happen to be in Istria in July, dont miss its Jazz festival, with a stage set up in city central square with performances every night throughout July with participation of the best world artists.

There is no public transport to Groznjan. Your only option is to take the Pula-Buzet-Buje bus and ask the driver to drop you off at Bijele Zemlje, and you’ll have to walk the two miles uphill from there. But once you reach the town, youll forget all the efforts.
