Krapina town
Krapina, picturesque town in the heart of Hrvatsko Zagorje, was mentioned for the first time in 1193. It was fortified town in 1330 of which only ruins have been conserved. In the middle of the 14th century it was free royal trading place, and by the end of the 15th century it was the seat of the Croatian ban (lord, master or ruler). This town is best known by the remnants of pre-historic men of Neanderthal type, found by Dragutin Gorjanovi Kramberger in 1899, in the cave on the Hunjakovo hill. Today, in front of the cave there are reconstruction of pre-historic men and animals in natural size. The permanent exhibition, the Evolution museum has been opened. The town has also the native museum of Ljudevit Gaj, who was born here in 1891 and has got his statue. It ranks as one of the most important archeological sites in Europe. Bones taken from the site are in the Archeological Museum in Zagreb. A small archeological museum, the Museum of Evolution, at the towns archeological site displays weapons and other instruments found at the site. More info about this museum.
