This town is
best known by the remnants of pre-historic men of Neanderthal type, found by
Dragutin Gorjanović Kramberger in 1899, in the cave on the Hušnjakovo hill.
Today, in front of the cave there are reconstruction of pre-historic men and animals in natural size. The permanent exhibition, the Evolution museum has been opened. The town has also the native museum of Ljudevit Gaj, who was born here in 1891 and has got his statue.
It ranks as one of the most important archeological sites in Europe. Bones taken from the site are in the Archeological Museum in Zagreb. A small archeological museum, the Museum of Evolution, at the town’s archeological site displays weapons and other instruments found at the site. More info about this museum.
