May in Croatia
What to do and see?

May in Croatia in five Croatia regions

May in Croatia is one of the most beautiful months. The weather is already warm with plenty of sun, particularly along the southern part of Adriatic coast. If you decide to visit Croatia in May try to visit Dubrovnik and Hvar. This is a right period for cruising fans, when the prices are reasonable, even the sea temperature is around 17°C (64°F) on Hvar island. Though the weather in May is not still a real “beach” weather, the sun is adequate to start your skin colouring.

The average temperature in Zagreb is 16°C (62°F) and in Dubrovnik 17°C (64°F) . Accommodation prices are much lower than in the high season, specially if you stay in private accommodation, youth budget hostels. Even hotel rates are up to 30% lower.

What to do and see in May!

National holidays - May 1 is Labour Day when the most public activities are closed, except in the tourist business. The transportation schedules will be on the normal regime and sometimes some ferry connections might be even reinforced on this national holiday.

May in Croatia - festivals and events:

Flowers festivals:
Split - May is the flowers month and many important festivals are taking place in Croatia. One of the most known is Split International Flower Fair held in the basement halls of Diocletian's Palace. Over a hundred of manufacturers and exhibitors of flowers, domestic and foreign will be present.

Zagreb - is also a home town of Flora Art, International Flower and Garden Show, taking place from May 27th to 31st at Bundek Lake, one of the two lakes in Zagreb. This is the largest horticulture event in this part of Europe.

St Duje Day - This great feast is held on May 7 celebrating the patron saint of Split is St Duje (St Domnius). If you happen to be in Split take part of this celebration with many games, prizes, processions and taste a risotto prepared in the very centre of the town.

The Dubrovnik International Film Festival is designed to begin when the French Cannes festival ends in May and lasts for four days. This relatively recent festival shows both foreign and domestic films and gives awards at the end.

Queer Zagreb FM Festival in May is a gay themed film festival. It’s not well accepted by local citizens but the festival is definitely worth visiting. If you want to know more about gays in Croatia, visit this website.
