National currency, Kuna banknotes, Kuna coins

What is currency in Croatia? The Kuna is Croatia currency. One Kuna (code-HRK) is equal to 100 Lipa. The Croatia banknote is available with value of 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10, and 5 Kuna. The Croatia coin is available with value of 5 Kuna, 2 Kuna, 1 Kuna, 50 Lipa, 20 Lipa, 10 Lipa, 5 Lipa, 2 Lipa, and 1 Lipa. 5 Kuna banknotes is limited in market and 5 Kuna coin is more popular.

500 Kuna banknote

The word "kuna" means "marten" in Croatian since it is based on the use of marten pelts as units of value in medieval trading. It has no relation to the various currencies named "koruna" (translated as kruna in Croatian). Read more on Wikipedia.org

100 Kuna banknote

Although there is 1 Lipa coin, practically is not used anymore. 5 Lipa and 2 Lipa are seldom used by local people in some regions of Croatia because the seller there seldom give back the change when the change is fewer than 10 Lipa. Example, if the total price for purchase is 9.96 Kuna. the cashier will ask for 10 Kuna instead of 9.96 Kuna.

50 Kuna banknote

What is the best currency to take on holiday to Croatia, Euro, USD dollars, pounds sterling or Kuna?
The Kuna of course as that is the national currency. You can pay in some places with Euro notes, but then you will get the change (coins) back in Kuna's. In that case you will have the conversion nightmare to work out if you have been charged correctly and have been given the right change.

Airports, bus stations, train stations and ferry ports have a suitable exchange office to change national currency but they have restricted operation hours and you will pay a commission of about 3%.

20 Kuna banknote

It much more to look for an ATM exchange office. ATMs (cash machine or bankomat) are now nearly everywhere in Croatia except the most isolated and uninhabited islands. Just look for the "bankomat" sign.

Visa, MasterCard, Cirrus, Plus, Maestro, and Euro card are the most commonly accepted cash cards. American Express is not commonly accepted . You will find ATMs at all major airports and train stations in Croatia and very near to the embarkation point for ferries and buses.
