Zadar sightseeing
Zadar sightseeing reviews!
The most important Zadar sightseeing places of interest are located on Zadar peninsula. To see all Zadar’s highlights points take a walking tour and don’t forget your digital camera. Your starting point can be a tour of city walls that gives you a short view of the city’s history. These walls are the only Roman and early Medieval remains of city fortifications. The most of the walls were built under the Venetian domination. There are four old city gates. Heading from north to west you will pass the first Gate of St.Rok, than the Port Gate built in 1573 preserving a part of Roman triumphal arch, Venetian lion, the symbol of Venice and dedication of the 1571 battle of Lepanto (the famous victory of Austrians against Turkish navy).
If turn back in the opposite direction you will reach the Square of the five Wells (Trg 5 Bunara). Heading from south to the west you will find the Town Gate, built by Venetian rulers with Renaissance decorations including St.Krizevan on the horseback and inevitable Venetian lion.
Zadar’s churches are another points of interest starting from Church of St.Donat, one of the most marvelous monuments in Dalmatia. This 9th century church was built in early Byzantine style over the Roman forum and named after Bishop Donat.
The Romanesque Cathedral of St.Anastasia (Sveta Stosija) , near St.Donat was build in the 12th century on the site of an old church with very ornately decorated façade. Don’t miss to enter this three nave interior decorated with 13th century wall paintings.
Other attractions worth visiting while walking the city center streets are: National Square (Narodni Trg) popular meeting point, Town Watchtower from 1562, Museum of Church Art, National Museum and Art Gallery.
From 2005 the most exciting amongst Zadar sightseeing attractions are “
The
Sea Organ” - musical instrument played by the sea.
